Why must i pay when I have settled

I settled my outstanding balance on my CC as per the settlement letter I received on the 190313, i received an sms stating that my debit order did not go through. as I had cancelled it with my bank. I was told by the call centre agent that even though i am using the CC i will still have to pay the R600 a month for keeping the account active. How is that ethical?
