The bank is giving a huge bill i dont understand

I opened a student achievers account with Standard bank in 2010 and I stopped using the account from 2011, late 2011 the bank send me a mail asking if they should close my account and I went to the Bethlehem branch to ask them to close it for me because it is where I had originally opened the account, when I got to the teller told me that the account will be closed automatically if I take a year not using the account. When I opened the account I was told that the student achievers account does not have any bank charges except from drawing cash, but today when I called the bank to reactivate my account to my knowledge that was closed about two years ago only to find that my is still active and owing more than R2000 that I have no idea how it accumulated to such a huge amount on a student achievers account, Please assist.
