Excessive bank chargers

When I had opened my student achiever account I was still a student and was looking for an account that would best suite my needs. The account has worked well for me and I have incurred no problems up until I started working, receiving a salary as such. I was unaware of the fact that for a debit order that goes off with no money in the account it is R115 each time which I think is ridiculous, at the time when I was umemployed I had debit orders going off on my account and for each of them I was charged R115 which has now led to my account being in an overdraft of almost R4000, this is bank charges alone! I was forced to open up a different bank account with a different service provider, as when I asked the consultant if I could close my account I was told that I would first need to pay the overdraft. I was stunned by this as where in heavens name would I get this kind of money? I was threatened with legal action if payment was not made, but how can I if I do not have the means to do so. I honestly think standard bank's bank charges are pathetically high especially for students. I need to know what can be done in the interim please.
