For as long as I can remember my mom has always flown with kulula. I have always purchased her tickets online and always used her nickname to do so. Recently I had her flown down to PE to join us on holiday - it was a return ticket. When we went to drop her off for the return flight the check-in clerk told us that her nick-name on the reservation didn't correspond to the name in her ID and that she would have to clear it with her supervisor. The supervisor arrived minutes later to tell us we need to purchase another ticket as my mom would not be allowed on the plane because - and this is what I found most irksome - my mom's nickname does not SOUND like a nickname to her? There was no reasoning with this lady either - I wanted to know how she got from OR Tambo to PE or for that matter wherever else she has flown in the past using her nickname. It also didn't seem to matter that my mom very much resembled the lady in her ID book. Eventually we purchased a new ticket. So I would like to thank kulula, their check-in clerk and their overzealous supervisor at PE airport for ruining my holiday, causing severe stress in the life of a 65 year-old and screwing me out of a thousand odd rand.
