False advertising on Telkom Simple

I signed up for a Telkom Simple Plus package which was advertised for R499 per month. The package included a 2mbps ADSL line, 10 gigs of internet per month, Telkom line rental, and free evening and landline calls. Over the last three months, my bill has consistently exceeded the R499 threshold.

In fact, even after using the phone during the day, the additional bill for the calls alone never exceeded R38. Yet, my bill from Telkom reflects that I pay R586.42 per month and this excludes VAT. When the VAT is added, I am paying an additional R82.10. Hence my bill comes to R668.52. That's R169.52 more than the advertised price.

I have no issue paying R499 ex VAT. I would ordinarily have expected my bill to have been R568.86 and not R668.52.

Telkom is a rip off and a company with no business ethics. They never return calls and their call centre agents aren't equipped to resolve the matter over the phone.

I don't expect a Telkom representative to call me because they are equally incompetent in resolving customer issues and queries.

Be wary of Telkom - rather stick to the conventional 3G services offered by MTN, Vodacom and Cell C.
