Problems cancelling

Trying to cancel my contract, which was upgraded 2 years ago, spoke to customer care today, told to go to vodacom shop, did that. Cant believe with my bills over the last 7/8 years they want me to pay nearly R9000 to canel. I am leaving the country and want to do this sensibly, I am going to close down bank accounts so will someone of authority contact me to discuss this sensibly. I'd like to keep the number so you will still be getting money from me, I also have my wifes account which I have been paying also for 7/8 years.
Something sensible needs to happen.
