Account Renewal without my Authorisation

Hetzner handled the registration and hosting of the website for one of my customers in 2011. The domain came up for renewal in early December 2012, but due to economic pressures during the course of 2012, my customer had to close their doors for business.

Prior to the renewal date, Hetzner sent me a system generated email for renewal and I subsequently tried to contact my customer, but with no success. Thinking that Hetzner would just cancel the hosting and not re-register the domain, I did not respond to their emails.

I then received an email from the Hetzner accounts department about bad debt. It seems that without my express authorization they went ahead and re-registered the domain and now expect me to pay for the service.
