Billed for something I did not have

2 years ago I broke a Sim card in half with the remark: "Yeah!!! Another one down! "
... with the shocking discovery that the Contract I paid in full and cancelled never got cancelled.
MTN now bill me for 2 years R6000 with a FINAL DEMAND via SMS...

I cancelled the contract 2 years ago, I never received a bill after that, no sms or email.
Until last week, I received a FINAL DEMAND via sms stating that I owe them R6000.
I still have the last bill, but never received my settlement letter as asked, and as I said I never received a bill also.
After the contract was paid in full, I tested the Sim and it did not work, I figured the contract was in fact cancelled and I broke the Sim in half.
Now I have another irritating company on my back demanding money I don't owe them.
I do not know now what to do, as my proof never got sent to me.
I would also like to know how many people they do this with.

If I was at fault I would take responsibility for it, but I was not.
The consultant who assisted me should take responsibility.
I was really ugly with the law firm lady this afternoon for which I apologize.
But this is still ridiculous.
