I am a new member at Planet Fitness gyms. I am writing to tell you that this company is out to rob its patrons. When I signed up there using my Discovery Vitality membership to receive the 80% discount on fees that Planet Fitness so actively advertise on signs all over Johannesburg, at no point did anyone there tell me that you have to phone Discovery and activate the membership. Of course, I did sign the contracts, and, of course, if I'd read the small print I would have noticed that. I admit it was a failing on my part not to do that. Nonetheless, I have been charged for the full membership and am now in arrears to the gym to the tune of R1500. Interestingly although I signed up with a debit order, I have never been charged that money.
Anyway, the point is that I think it's hugely cheeky to sign up patrons offering a discount that they need to activate. Virgin Active does NOT do that - they sign you up and activate your membership with Discovery themselves. The idea on Planet Fitness' behalf is that they are obviously hoping that innocent and naive dopes like myself will not read their contracts and will fail to phone Discovery to activate their memberships.
