Cant remove my name from itc

I once had an account with Home Choice, then in the process i lost my job and i missed some payments, so they handed my name over to the debt collectors of which i settled the account wit the debt collectors. Its been years since i settled the account but my name is still listed, i contacted them so that they can remove my name and they gave me the debt collectors number to ask for paid up letter but the numbers they gave me are not working. I tried them several but they keep on giving me the wrong, i am desperate and don't know what to do now cos i need to apply for a house and my name is listed for something i paid long ago
