Canned fruit cocktail in juice that was spoilt

I bought canned fruit cocktail in juice and ended up having to throw away the contents. The fruits were mashed up and it had a bad smell. i checked the expiry date and it was fine i then inspected if the can had any dents and it didnt. I was very dissapointed by this as I was in the middle of making a dessert and could not continue as I had to throw out the whole can. I wish to know going forward as a consumer what must i do if I come across the same problem in the future.
