Pick 'n Pay
Selling nearly expired items with no transparency

I was seriously unimpressed this morning at Pinelands Pick 'n Pay. As I walked in, I saw there were Bakers Kips selling for R9.99. "Pretty good price, " I thought. So I bought two boxes.By chance I looked at the bottom of the box at the till, and noticed that they expire on 17/9/2013 (i.e. in two days' time). "That's really very, very bad of Pick 'n Pay to be selling things that have been manufactured so long ago and are just about to expire" I said. The cashier just stared at me in a bored way. "Can I speak to your manager? " I asked, to which the woman packing bags sad "I'm the manager today". She just smiled and said "I'm sorry".

I'm totally appalled that a massive store like Pick 'n Pay can hoodwink customers into buying their just-about-to-expire items (which typically go into a pantry and don't get consumed immediately) without some kind of transparency about why they're on a (not so amazingly special) special. I think this displays an appalling attitude towards the rights of consumers... Perhaps it's reasonable to try and get rid of just-about-to-expire goods, but then they should be hugely reduced and displayed with a clear sign that explains why.
