Downgrade without choice

Today my decoder stopped working and on examination it was found that the RF out was damaged. I took it to the Multichoice agents in Kimberley as it was insured with mutlichoice. I was told that it would be replaced but that the decoder I had was no longer available.
I was told that I had to take the cheapest model available without a choice to upgrade to a better model. If I wanted a better model, I would then have to pay full price for it, without any compensation for the model that was not working any more. Why then pay insurance?
I know that the decoder that I had was not top of the range, but now I have one that I would never buy if I was a new subscriber.
It would be better if customers had a choice to upgrade their current decoder if it was replaced and pay in the difference.
