SARS
TAX FOR A GIFT

I was sent a gift from my aunt in the UK valued at 50 pounds. When it arrived at customs, DHL called me and asked me to explain what was in the package and the value of each item. I've just had a baby and my aunt sent me hand knitted clothes as well as a teddy bear. This morning I then got an email asking me to pay R500 for tax. So I called DHL and they said that it isn't them that wants the money its SARS. Why should I have to pay R500 for a gift when the gift is valued at R600? Plus I'm on maternity leave so I'm not earning any money. And besides that I pay tax every month on my salary!! And if I don't pay the R500 the parcel will go to a warehouse somewhere or someone will just take it! Then when I called SARS they directed me to their website to go have a look at a 620 page document that has a breakdown of every possible thing that can be imported. But I'm not importing anything! Its a gift for crying out loud. And now no one else can assist me.
