After reading in the press about the disgusting things, even human tissue, in our meat this week, I've decided to make my own mince and boerewors. I went to Hokaai butchery this morning as I was used to their excellent quality and and service in the past.
I took a prepacked 5kg topside for the beef and ordered 1.5kg pork meat and 2.5kg pork "spek" as well as sausage casings. The salesman returned with a single pack for the pork. I said that I want meat and "spek", however he assured me that this was exactly what I needed for boerewors. He also charged me R35 for 10gm of sausage casings, that work out at R3500/kg for animal intestines! Even the cashier at the till agreed that it was ridiculous, however she ringed it I paid for it.
Arriving at home I cut the topside into blocks ready to mince, the quality was excellent, however when I opened the pork it only contained pieces of soft fat, not 'spek", with very little pork meat. I also bought a bulk pack of pork from their fridge and was surprised to see that he charged me exactly the same price per kg for these offcuts.
I don't want Hokaai to rectify it, I just want to let them know why I will NEVER buy from them them again.
