I bought a second hand car a few months ago and took out McCarthy Maxi Cover extended warranty for my peace of mind. Little did I know, this is more trouble than it's worth.
My car began to behave erratically and became almost undrivable in that all I could do was putt around slowly. Luckily, I had already booked the car, 2007 Audi A3 2.0T, into Audi Centre Cape Town to have the break pads replaced so I did not have a long wait without a drivable car before it could be booked in.
Shortly after my car was dropped off, I received a large quote for repairs to the engine in the way of Camshafts and ancillaries. Most of the day later, I was informed that McCarthy would only cover 50% of the cost because the failure was due to wear and tear.
As someone who knows about cars, I know that it is not "normal wear and tear" for camshaft failure even after 200 000kms on a car that has been serviced according to the schedule and my car has only done half that! The response to this was that they call it wear and tear because the car had not physically broken down. I should have driven the damaged car until it actually broke down and cost them far more! Then I would not be out of pocket.
