My Wife has a cheque account which upon being unemployed emptied and went into arrears, yes if we had closed it there might not have been a problem.

She was called by Mrs George from SB end November/beginning of December to say she had to pay the amount she was in debt, which was about 1800.
She asked if she could please pay on a monthly basis as she had other bills needing payment as well and since she was unemployed she could not afford to pay this upfront. The SB employee confirmed that as long as we had paid the full amount by April 2013 it would be okay. She was told they would put the account on hold until we had paid back the arrears and then it could be closed or kept open.

We have since paid R1650.
Today she received a call threatening that if she did not pay R700 (after already paying an amount of R250 this month) in the next two days she would be handed over to the court and that the amount owed totalled 2800 and not 1800.
Seriously?? Can standard Bank not see that she is actually paying back her debt?
How did the amount increase by R1000 rand?

I have had standard bank accounts for 20 years now and this will easily make me close them and move
