I had an ABSA credit years ago, which I paid off (at Northgate Mall branch) and closed in 2009. What ABSA failed to do was to do their job and close the account. I cut up the card and obviously have not used it since. I never followed up with ABSA on whether the account was closed as I expected that they had followed my simple instructions, as a paying customer, to close my account. Now this year, I started receiving notifications that ABSA had handed over case to their attorneys. I was shocked to hear this, because I was under the impression that the credit card account had been closed back in 2009. There was no effort from ABSA to communicate any of this to me, but they strongly felt that they were entitled to the R1050 of charges that they claimed I owed them. I tried to fight this, but was left with no choice but to pay this money to avoid a bad credit record. I however feel cheated, because I have been forced to pay charges for a card I have not used for the past 4 years. I have been robbed of my hard earned money by an institution which was supposed to have my best interests at heart. I am strongly disappointed with ABSA and feel let down by them.
