SMS Spam after reply to stop

I have never done any business with African bank but I get sms from them daily. There is an option where you can reply STOP if you don't want to receive sms but this option does not work. I get at least one sms per day costing me R1 per stop. I phoned African Bank Call centre yesterday 0861115433 to ask them to stop the sms for the STOP function does not work. I gave the call centre supervisor the cell phone number just to be called back a couple of hours later asking me for my ID number. I have never done business with African Bank and do not intend doing business with any other bank besides my current bank. Why do they need an ID to stop sms. If they work with ID numbers where did they get mine? I just received another sms!
