Last year (2012) I was contacted by my ABSA branch to FICA my account, otherwise my account would be blocked and I would be unable to use my account! After going through a lot of trouble to get the necessary documents to ABSA hatfield (proof of residence, affidavit from police station, ID etc.) I was told it had been sorted out. January of this year I was told that I need to take all of these documents to ABSA because I had not taken these documents into the branch. After contacting ABSA and asking them why I hadn't FICA'd my account I was told that on the system it showed that I had come into the branch to FICA but that the documents were not on the system.

My account has now been blocked and I am unable to withdraw money from it. I am staying in my fathers flat as I am a student at the University of Pretoria, my father lives in KZN and it is not possible for him to give me a proof of residence. I am not willing to go through all the procedure of going to the police station to prove my residence, certified copies of ID etc. as I have done this all before and the fault was not on my side. I see it as unacceptable that my account has now been blocked after all my effort.
