They keep on Billing me after 24 contract

I took out a cell phone contract with Autopage Cellular Oct 2009 after the salesperson pestered me continuously over a couple of days. He assured me more than once that this was only a 24 month contact. I was contacted for an upgrade end of 2012 and clearly stated that I wanted the contract cancelled and that I was not interested in an upgrade. I subsequently stopped the debit order at the bank..Feb 2012 Auto Page sent me a letter to tell me that I owe them money. I asked them what I owed them money for, as I did not get a new phone and I certainly did not use the airtime and the contract was only for 24 months. Only then did they say that the contract has to be cancelled by written request. How can they enter into contracts telephonically, but the consumer may not cancel telephonically?
I asked them to send me a copy of the contract where I signed and where they stated these facts. They replied that the contract is voice recorded. I then asked them for a copy of the voice recording which they never produced. They have now reported me to the credit bureau. I find this very unfair.
