Bad Service and bad manufactured product

I received a pair of Caterpillar men's boots as a gift from my father in-law, in June 2012. Purchased at Takkie Town President Square Krugersdorp. After wearing the boots on the 3rd day I have noticed that the boots is falling apart, I took it back to Takkie town and explained to them that it was a gift and showed them the condition of the boots. The staff took the boots and assured me that they will return it to their manufacturing warehouse and that they will be in contact with me. To date (after 7 months) no one contacted, thus I went to Takkie Town on the 18/02/13 to find out what's happening, the staff had bad attitude and told me that if they refund me then they will have to pay for the product out of their own pocket. Today a customer Care Nompelo informed me that I have to take the boots to a shoemaker on the streets, because I don't have a proof of payment, which is beyond ridiculous as the product is new and I explained the situation previously that it was a gift. My question is why did they take in the poor quality boots if they knew that was the case? Why keep it in their care for 7 months? Why should I as the consumer suffer for a product which was a factory fault??
