Pvr recordings blocked!! why?

The question is, to who do the pvr belong? you the owner who bought it cash or multi choice who provide the movies etc you saved on the pvr. at a brai my friend told me that on disconnection his pvr all his recordings cannot be viewed as he have to pay again! this is a surprise to me as you can only record if you paid for the service etc. So i decided to test this and recorded a lot of series and movies to watch later and then not pay the next month as i would have enough to recorded to keep me busy. low and behold when multichoice stopped my card the message was clear. TO VIEW YOUR RECORDINGS PLEASE PAY. First of all i bought my whole system cash and i paid multi choice for providing me with the stuff i recorded on MY pvr. To me this is double dipping as i have to pay now twice, once to record the items then again to watch them!!! This is daylight, so please explain to South Africa! oh and yes i have both the other 2 satelite tv services and very happy with them. thanks
