Forcing violations (making 'criminals')

I do not have an e-tag, am not registered, and have serious problems with many aspects of the e-toll system. I rarely use the highways and make the occasional trip to ORT.

The last trip was with someone else's vehicle, so I went to pay the toll for that. Interesting. I was told that nothing was owed. I asked for a statement to that effect, and was told it couldn't be printed. I was shown the details on the monitor, and I asked for a screenprint, but was told that wasn't possible either.

I insisted that I had been on the highway. Furious typing ensued. I was told that I owed R14.78 - which I paid in cash. I asked why I was first told R0 and now R14.78. The answer was that he had only checked for violations, not current transactions from the previous 7 days.

I find that exceptionally dishonest. Although I was physically present to settle the outstanding bill within their stipulated time, ETC would rather push current transactions into violation (with a 300% increase). There are no transaction details anywhere - which makes reconciling this kind of dishonesty very difficult for multiple journeys/gantries over several days.

Be warned - the system is designed to force violations.
