Expired chocolates

I purchased a chocolate slab for my kids at our local shop when i got home and opened it to the entire chocolate was white and breaking easily the expiry date is next year 2024 but clearly the product is not edible my kids could have fallen ill if i hadn't opened it before giving it to them to eat.
