When I tanked up with petrol saw a notice on the petrol pump that the forecourt and the shop will be close from 1 February for two months for refurbishment. On enquiry learnt from the pump attendant that they all will go unpaid till the service station is reopened. According to him the manager cannot pay the staff because he will also be without income. The decision to upgrade is that of BP. This demonstrates a 'bad attitude' on the part of a company of the size of BP towards its, by proxy, employees, and the customers who depend on enthusiastic employees. Returning that evening to the service station learnt from a very despondent employee that they are hoping to get their UIF cards today (Monday). Once the application to UIF is submitted how long before they are assisted? Why should the state support them when BP has rendered them temporally redundant?
