My Director and I took a VIP Minister of Parliament to lunch. We notified the waiter of our distinguished guest and asked him to ensure we were given the bill. The waiter offered drinks at the table and our guest requested red wine. The waiter suggested the guest go with him to the cellar (we were not invited). Waiter suggested a wine to our guest. He brought it decanted to our table. Not once did he notify the host of the cost of the wine. When the bill arrived the wine was R1800. We called the manager after we left the restaurant to complain and the managers answer was that the waiter had give the price to the guest. This was not so and not to mention we had said on arrival that we were hosting and paying the bill. Why did he not advise us of the price - not our guest. The manager - Mark - did not handle this well at all and as we take lots of dignitaries to lunch we will not be going back to Butcher Shop and Grill. We feel the waiter conned us and especially as he knew up front who way paying he had no right to decant wine and not tell us the price.
