We no longer need a home loan account and simply wanted to cancel it. Without being informed upfront, we received an invoice from attorneys appointed by Standard Bank (obviously BEE) for R2, 200!! In order to determine whether this was a reasonable rate, we obtained a quote from our attorney, who would charge 50%. We complained at the Home Loan department that we want to use our own attorney, but to no avail. This is such a rip-off. I, as the customer, should be able to choose my own attorney, especially if they could do the same job for half price. I refuse to pay the R2, 200, but also do not want to continue paying the high bank charges to maintain my home loan account. In any case, why do we have to pay such high attorney fees to cancel a service? This is ridiculous!
