I arrived at the Bank's Dannhauser branch at around 3pm on Monday 02 Dec. 13 to deposit money into my parents' business account. Queues were relatively long due to it being a pension day. The teller was quite dissatisfied that I had a substantial amount of coins. She continuously questioned me on why I had come to the bank that late, she went on about how I should ask my parents to send me earlier, I quote "The bank is closing and now I must count change". It was an unpleasant and extremely humiliating moment as she had raised her voice in full view of other clients. She thereafter conversed with a colleague in Zulu under the impression that I could not understand what is being said, mainly fussing about the issue and having to weigh a mere 2 packets of 5 cent coins. I was unaware that Standard Bank had a policy pertaining to what types of money can be deposited at what times of the day. Oh and to top it all off, I had the deposit book thrown back at me. I can't help but wonder if an adult would be treated in the same way. It is largely disappointing that this is the only Bank in our small town, leaving us with not much of a choice. What ever happened to service with a smile?
