A vodacom number is a number for life

I am Eric Boodhoo. I have had this number 0793005479 for over eight years.and granted i dont use it all the time. Upon calling the call centre, they said its already in recycle and they cant do a sim swap. I am to beleive that this number is for life.please assist me.
