New Years Eve disappointment

Four of us bought tickets specifically to go up the mountain in the cable car on NYE for the countdown. We bought tickets and arrived at 9pm (two hours before the last car was due to go up) only to discover that Table Mountain Cable had closed at 7pm and staff/operators were nowhere to be seen. The only explanation we were offered (by a security guard), was that it was too windy... yet there was not a breath of wind at all and it was a perfectly clear evening. I can understand that at 7pm it may have been a little gusty (we were actually on a catamaran at the time and that managed fine out at sea), but could they not have waited it out? As soon as the sun went down (an hour after they closed), the wind stopped and there were hundreds of disappointed people on the mountain (it took us an hour to drive from the cable station to Kloof Nek after watching the fireworks). Disappointing end to a great evening.
