On a flight from Shanghai to Cape Town, we checked in baggage in Shanghai, but asked for it to be dropped of in Johannesburg, to meet up with someone who has two separate bookings. On checkout in Johannesburg, we were treated like criminals, even being interrogated over a vegetarian sausage (yes, a sausage, not a gun!). Then we are told the baggage is overweight and we have to pay R700, after a big argument, they reduced it to R350.
If the baggage was overweight, why did they check it in in the first place? If we didn't ask for it to go to Johannesburg, it would have gone unnoticed to Cape Town, and they would have been forced to carry the overweight baggage.
I can understand if this is for weight & balance purposes, but in that case they wouldn't accept the R350 (if they did, then there's a bigger problem).
They also refused to refund us for the ticket so we could search for another airline to take us to Cape Town.
We did not expect this level of service from one of the world's leading airlines. We even joined their loyalty club in order to use them for future travel, and the fact that I have an Amex card which can earn me Avios of Voyager Miles.
Fly SAA next time for us.
