Late for my flight

I was scheduled to take a 0610 flight to PE on the 27th of August, I arrived at the check in counter at 0534. The lady helping me said they have closed the boarding gate. I told her that I was in the same flight last week and we had to wait for almost 15 minutes inside the bus waiting for a passenger; she made a call and told me that I should arrive 30 minutes before departure, the alternative was to buy another ticket. I had to buy another flight ticket for a R1003. I checked in and went to the boarding terminal gate E7 to PE; upon arrival I noticed that the bus taking clients to the aircraft was still waiting, I had coffee and soon thereafter the bus left. If I was that late how come the bus was still down stairs. I found myself pondering over this issue and I am quite disturbed by an SAA staff member. Is this a way for the airline to make more money, how many of passengers are made to buy tickets, just because they are a few minutes late, that is if they are late to begin with.
