Why bother with insurance

Telecommunications

I have been having problems with my phone for some time now. On 16 January 2014 I visited the Vodacom Secunda branch. I was told by the technician that the phone needs to be sent away for repairs. Today 29 Janurary 2014 I phoned them again to follow up on the progress on my phone. Now I was suddenly told that I need to pay for my phone to be fixed. since the front cover is damaged. My question is what the heck does the front cover have to do with my phone's problems? And this phone is still under warranty AND I have insurance with Vodacom which should be covering things like this. Nobody at the branch can tell me why I actually have to pay for the phone to be fixed.
