I would like to cancel my membership

I joined the above mentioned gym in March/April 2013 and would like to cancel my contract - I called their number on 0119383457 and was referred to a Pauline on 071 692 1909 who informed that in order to cancel my contract I would have to pay an amount equal to 50% of tenure of my contract with the company. This person claims that the tenure of my contract is 36 months.

I had no idea that the contract has a tenure and that I would have to pay any cancellation fees when I joined the gym.

Further this is illegal and contrary to the Consumer Protection Act for the following reasons:

The Act provides that fixed-term consumer agreements must not exceed a certain maximum period. The regulations currently prescribe 24 months from the date of the consumer's signature as the maximum period, unless such longer period is expressly agreed with the consumer and the supplier can show a demonstrable financial benefit to the consumer. I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT THE PERIOD OF THE CONTRACT WAS NEVER MENTIONED TO ME AT ANY POINT WHEN I JOINED THE GYM. Further, I believe that if I am no longer able to attend gym and exercise the membership I am not receiving any financial benefit to the membersh
