Inability to close a simple account

My wife closed her Standard bank savings account at the Key West Branch in Krugersdorp in Feb 2013 after 27 years because of ongoing poor service. A couple of months later she found that the account was NOT closed and service fees had been charged in excess of R1000! How is this possible on a savings account? She then took a day leave and went to the Erasmus kloof branch where she and my mother in law were the only customers at the branch at the time. They were kept waiting without the employees acknowledging that they were there. Eventually my wife made a scene to be assisted as my mother in law is frail because of chemo therapy and it became problematic to wait indefinitely for service. They wavered the charges and supposedly closed the account but LO AND BEHOLD, we have just received a SMS stating the account is in arrears AGAIN! After phoning them there is apparently no record of the account EVER being closed and want to charge us for divulging what charges are being made to the account. What must we do to get a simple bank account closed with these people, contact the ombudsman? ALL WE WANT IS TO HAVE THE STD BANK ACCOUNT CLOSED and you cannot even get that right!
