CLOSED ACCOUNT NUMBER GIVEN TO SOMEONE ELSE

My mother closed her savings account with Standard Bank approximately 4 years ago. She opened a cheque account instead. She forgot to change her claim payment details with Discovery. Discovery refunded my mom for a medical procedure but made payment into the old savings account (which is now closed). The worst thing that could and should have happened was that the money should bounce back to Discovery. Low and behold however - Standard Bank re-opened the account (that my mother has closed) and allocated it to someone else. The result is that the refund from Discovery is now in someone else's account. My mother has to now run around getting letters from doctors and from Discovery proving that the money was intended for her. This is CRAZY!! How can Standard Bank not have measures in place to deal with situations like this. If they want to recycle account numbers surely there should at the very least be a prefix attached to the number so that things like this don't happen. My mother now has to wait 10 - 15 days for this to be resolved and in the meantime someone else could be spending every last cent. This is disgusting Standard Bank - surely you should treat your customers better.
