In December I closed my Standard Bank account due to repeated incidents of poor service over the last 20 years that I have been a client. I thought that at least closing my account would be simple but it appears not. After my second trip to the branch they were able to close the account and pay out the remaining amount to me in cash. My card was destroyed at the branch. For the last month I have continued to receive smses from Standard Bank about an overdrawn amount. It appears they are still charging me bank charges however when I call their helpline they are unable to access my account because it is 'closed'. When I tried to opt out of notifications the require my long card number which I no longer have as my card was destroyed. So, I am being charged for an account for which I have no card, the call centre is unable to access my account because it is 'closed, ' I have no access to my internet profile any more but get smses informing me I am overdrawn that I cannot stop! I really dread wasting more hours of my life in a Standard Bank branch but it looks like that is the only way to get out of this mess.
