Sue me for charges on my CLOSSED account?!

I went to Standard Bank, Jacaranda Branch to close my account. I was told that I could not close my account as I had to wait for my service charges to be deducted before I could close my account and that I should return to the branch after my service fees had been deducted in order to close my account. My account was therefore open for an entire month longer. This in itself is absolutely ridiculous as the date which charges are deducted can be changed!

Nevertheless, I went back a month later to close my account. The consultant assisting me told me to withdraw all the money that was in my account. I did so and returned to them. They told me that my account was closed and CUT UP my cards in front of me. Now, almost 6 months later they are threatening to sue me for R600 outstanding bank charges!!! I have unfortunately misplaced my letter stating that I closed the account. They are refusing to listen and have been extremely rude every time they have communicated with me. My question is... If my account was not closed, HOW CAN THE CONSULTANT TAKE MY CARDS AND CUT IT UP IN FRONT OF ME?!?! I am absolutely disgusted to say the least! I have never been treated so poorly!
