Check-In Counter at OR Tambo Airport

I fly to Cape Town most Monday morning's at 06:00. To save time I perform online check-in the night before and simply arrive at the airport, proceed to the Bag drop counter and continue on my way. At approximately 05:00 on 29 July 2013, the situation was different - the airport was extremely busy and no SAA staff were manning the bag drop counters. I asked a lady in a polite manner behind the counter, and I was simply told to go stand in the normal check-in, or if I had a gold card (which I don't have) I could stand in the Premium line. I find this completely unacceptable as the morning peak is probably the busiest time at the airport and yet there are no staff available and then you get greeted with a poor and rude attitude. It is early in the morning for everyone and there is no need to be rude. Why should I have to go stand in another queue for 25 minutes and risk missing my flight? The Bag drop counter has worked well in the past so why the sudden decrease in quality?
