Miserable experience signing up for new contract

I'm fed up with my current phone carrier and wanted to set up a contract with MTN (I had heard they're the best for service). Wow. I spent an hour in the store giving them all the correct documentation and was told that within 2-4 hours my credit check would be complete and I could come back to pick up the phone. Over two days later, it was finally finished. (Apparently 'the system was down') I ran back to the mall to pick it up (in the nick of time - just about to leave for the long weekend) just to be told that the SIM card hadn't been activated because (you guesed it) "the system was down". The phone was sitting there on the counter, but she couldn't give it to me for some unknown reason and I've been told to come back next Tuesday - one week from the original date this mess should have been sorted out. It's been a terrible start to a two-year contract. For a telecommunications company, you'd think their 'systems' would be more robust. In 2013, being in between carriers for a week makes it near impossible to do business. This isn't acceptable.
