Faulty Wifi router not replaced

On the 19 February 2013, i purchased a VC VF R205 Wireless router 1329179, at the time, i was not told what the conditions were in terms of device replacement. i was told to buy a pay as you go sim card from MTN with this device.
On the 25 February 2013, i returned the same modem to CNA eastgate, I was told by Niresh that the device was locked into Vodacom and could not be used with a MTN sim card. I duly bought another pay as you go card adn decided to test the device there and then. the device still showed the same message - insert SIM.
the device was obviously faulty and i was told by Niresh that it would be replaced as i had bought it less than 7 days ago. he then asked me for the box that the modem came in. I had thrown the box away into the rubbish at the complex where i live.
for this reason - i cannot be given a replacement router. as vOdacom need to prove that the modem was purchased at CNA. in this day and age, Vodacom do not keep a record of what they send to their vendors.
in the meantime, i am inconvenienced and i sit without a modem, which i bought because i needed to use it now. in terms of the Consumer protection act, this cannot be acceptable behaviour.
