ADSL. Hundreds of Rands every month for nothing

Our ADSL has been intolerably poor for years now. We are supposed to have a 1mb/s line but in some months our usual speed is around 1KB/s. Naturally, this is so slow that no webpage ever loads and no email ever arrives. Line attenuation is at 70 bB and the noise margin is generally somewhere under 5 or 6. Therefore we often have much difficulty getting synchronisation at all. We list a fault with Telkom every few months, battling our way through the call centre and explaining endlessly all the things we have already tried. They either pass the buck to our instruments or to Afrihost or they mark the fault as resolved on the website without having dome anything or telling us. We have replaced our router and all the wiring in the house without effect and Afrihost assures us that they are not to blame.

The end result is that we pay nearly R500 a month for internet and we get a trickle that only occasionally amounts to a vaguely usable connection. I don't feel like wasting any more money.

I suspect the issue is Dslam overload or the massive line attenuation problem.
