Cannot refund without Proof of Payment

Good day, I received an SMS stating that my account needs to be paid or my cell phone service will be suspended. I did so, even though I have always paid my account via debit order. MTN proceeded to deduct the payment from my bank account in any case. Therefore a double payment.
MTN acknowledges the double payment. I requested a refund and was told this would happen within 3 days. After 3 days with no payment I contacted MTN again and have now been told that I need to give Proof of Payment before they will refund me!
