Phone blocked due to Virgin's inefficient systems

Today my Virgin Mobile phone blocked outward calls and SMSes, saying no airtime. However this is a traditional contract effected more than a decade ago, where the monthly amount due is paid by debit order. From what I have been able to surmise from the many calls to their call centre, either they introduced a new computer system that ignored long-standing clients, or their debit order processing is so tardy that previous months' invoices are added to the current month (even though they have been paid), then exceeding the artificial limit they impose on the account. Either way, their everyday administration is not working and I have been given no assurance that the same inconvenience will not happen next month and the month thereafter. Virgin closed most of their branches. Did they also retrench most of their IT and admin staff, so that they cannot provide the same standards as other cellphone providers?
