Vodacom
Unbelievable & Illegal Cancellation Policy

Telecommunications

I have 14 months of my contract, which is a data contract of 2G for R199 per month. I recently acquired ADSL and do not need a 3G contract. When I phoned to cancel, I was advised that I would have to pay in 75% of the remaining balance.

If I got the full benefit of the contract I would end up paying R2, 800. If I want to cancel and receive no benefits going forward, I have to pay R2, 100.

That is contrary to the CPA as it clearly specifies a "reasonable penalty" for early termination. A penalty charge of 75% is exploitative and unfair. There is no rational commercial reason why they can't sell my contract to someone else and charge me a month or 2 penalty. 75% penalty is so obviously unreasonable, I cannot believe that such a large company can continue to operate the way it does.

I want a response from Vodacom explaining how your company can justify such patently unfair practices. I want to cancel and I want to pay only a REASONABLE cancellation charge. If I don't hear anything very soon I will have to take this further because as a consumer, I feel completely exploited.
