My contract has ended, why am i still being billed

My 2 year contract with MTN expired in Dec 2012.
When I called in to let them know that I did not want an upgrade but merely wanted to continue with my old phone but continue to get my MTN minutes etc... I was told this is not possible.!!
Why must I continue to pay every month for a phone that I have already paid off? Why is it so difficult to get a "downgrade" but a breeze to upgrade???
Worst callcentre ever, these people are clearly not trained well.
