Vodacom
Carry-ove

Telecommunications

My personal phone and the company-issued one are on the Vodacom network. The latter is on a Talk 500 package. I manage my talk time efficiently and over the past two years, I've always had carry-over minutes left. Almost three months ago, I received an iPhone 5 as an upgrade with 500 MB of data in addition to the 500 minutes. I recently noticed that my remaining minutes, and most recently my data, were being forfeited. Logic tells me that if I get 500MB and 500 minutes a month, and there is a surplus in the first month, there would always be a surplus if I never used more that my allocated minutes and MB in the following months. One would expect Vodacom to use the oldest minutes/MB first to ensure the freshest ones are carried over for the allowed time. But when I requested a USSD detailed balance, I noticed the talk time and data is broken down into chunks with different expiry dates. How is this determined exactly? Unless I've misunderstood this process completely, it tells me that Vodacom is ripping off millions of people with this system. I find it utterly disgusting.
