Debit orders not going off

A Few months ago I got tired of going to the store to pay them every month, so i asked the person who called me to assist me with setting up the debit order... my monthly instalments went off and there was no issues until they phoned me telling me that i have a outstanding amount and that i need to pay it. after i said i would pay them at the end of the month they phone me again... Why did they not take the money with the debit order? and claim the final amount... the whole idea behind this was that i would not have to worry about paying them... I feel they are doing this to get more interest out of the amount by keeping me in debt to them. Is this legal? I am not happy with their service and the way they run things...
