Refuse to exchange an item

Went to Shoprite primrose bought a soft drink. ( fanta pineapple) only to realise that my colleague is allergic to it. I didn't even leave the store I asked to exchange the product.. The branch manager who was very rude told me they don't do exchanges when we asked her what was he reason for not doing them she couldn't. Give a proper explanation
